• Human Plague Cases in U.S. Increase in 2006. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports a total of 13 human plague cases in 2006 among residents of four states: New Mexico (seven cases), Colorado (three cases), California (two cases), and Texas (one case). This is the largest number of cases reported in a single year in the United States since 1994. Full Story
• EPA Proposes Continued Registration of DDVP. To help get DDVP reregistered, the manufacturer, AMVAC (American Vanguard), asked EPA to remove many uses and add label restrictions to the DDVP products that will remain. Based on those changes, EPA "determined that DDVP would be eligible for reregistration" and "that risks do not exceed levels of concern, and therefore no additional risk mitigation measures are necessary at this time." • CDC Reports West Nile Virus Cases for 2005. The number of reported cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) was slightly higher in 2005 than in 2004, but less than 30% of the cases in 2003. As of January 2006, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) lists 2,819 cases of WNV for 2005. Forty-two percent of cases exhibited symptoms of meningitis or encephalitis, and there were 105 deaths.
